Dr. Teresa Shen is a fourth-generation practitioner of alternative medicine and CEO of Eastern Medical Center, a well-established and ever expanding acupuncture practice. Dr. Shen’s team combines advanced healthcare practices with the latest non-invasive western technology, treating clients who suffer from both acute and chronic health challenges.

“People come to me looking for something different and I advise them to try natural solutions first,” says Shen, a licensed acupuncturist and Master of Chinese Medicine. While western medications can drastically alter the body’s chemistry, alternative medicine works with the body, she explains. For example, if one area in the body experiences blockage, acupuncture or acupressure can target the affected area and providing a boost of energy to the whole body which promotes self-healing.

“The body knows how to heal itself, if given the proper support to do so,” says Shen. Her sessions typically include acupuncture and other non-invasive modalities, such as cranial sacral therapy and bio-decoding, to identify underlying causes of medical conditions. “Whatever my clients need, I have the tools, and I seek out new tools—it’s my passion. Natural healing was a part of my upbringing, but most people don’t know their options."

Shen’s father, Dr. Mason Shen, a renowned acupuncturist and patient advocate, founded Eastern Medical Center in 1982. The elder Shen introduced his young daughter to 5,000 years of traditional Chinese healing methods, as a patient first. When she was five years old, Shen experienced a nosebleed that would not stop. Her father then put a tiny needle in her arm and the bleeding subsided. Shen clearly recalls her early fascination with acupuncture following her nosebleed. Later in life, she trusted her gut and followed in her father’s footsteps as an acupuncturist; engaging the rigorous study of alternative medicine.

“In high school, I developed severe stomach problems,” Shen recounts. “At my mother’s urging, I saw conventional doctors who gave me every test imaginable; the tests were inconclusive. The doctors could not give me answers, and I was still in pain.” She tried acupuncture again, under her father’s care, and experienced instant relief. In that moment, she recalled feeling truly inspired by her father to learn the secret of the needle.
After graduating from the University of California Davis, the young graduate traveled to the ancient Chinese city of Tianjin to receive her Masters in Traditional Chinese Medicine from the Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The university is the only institution to be authorized by China's Ministry of Education as the International University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Today, as a licensed acupuncturist with over 15 years of experience, she effectively blends eastern medicine with western technology. Dr. Shen provides effective clinical solutions to meet most health challenges; (including but not limited to) neurological and musculoskeletal conditions, unexplained pain, gynecological issues, skin issues, allergies, infections, digestive issues, infertility, high blood pressure, obesity, smoking and low immunity.
